About the Department

“Shalyatantra” is a branch of Ayurveda, the traditional system of Indian medicine, that deals with surgery. It’s one of the eight classical divisions of Ayurveda (Ashtanga Ayurveda) and is considered the ancient Indian equivalent of modern surgical practices. This Department integrates classical Ayurvedic surgical knowledge with modern surgical principles.

Our department specializes in the diagnosis and surgical management of various conditions, including anorectal disorders, non-healing wounds, ulcers, abscesses, urinary calculi, and more, using both para-surgical procedures and operative techniques.

To preserve, promote, and modernize the rich surgical heritage of Ayurveda, making it accessible and applicable in today’s healthcare system.

Key Aspects of the Department

  • This department focuses on surgical treatment, wound management, trauma care, abscesses, tumors, fractures, anorectal disorders (like piles, fistula), and urogenital conditions.

  • It includes minor and major surgical techniques such as Ksharasutra therapy, Agni karma (cauterization), Raktamokshana (bloodletting), and application of leeches (Jalaukavacharana).
